Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde is a well-known DOC growing region in the northwest of Portugal. The wines produced here are so fresh and light that they have been given the nickname "verde" (green). Especially the young white wines from this region enjoy a high reputation. The landscape in this part of Portugal is green and lush. Famous are especially the vineyards along the Douro River, which crosses the region. Characteristic of the wines there is also the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which brings the region abundant rainfall and thus good yields.
On a more than 15,000 hectares of vineyards, mainly white wine grapes are cultivated. Numerous autochthonous grape varieties are grown. One of the best known grape varieties from Vinho Verde is Alvarinho. The wine from this grape variety is characterized by a fine acidity and is best enjoyed still young.
